India today magazine has unveiled a list of the top 10 powerful politicians in India. This list includes the nation’s most powerful personalities, who have the real power to run the nation. What are the qualities that you think a good politician must have?

APJ Abdul Kalam

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam intimately involved in India’s civilian space programme and military missile development efforts. He thus came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.

Kalam was elected as the 11th President of India in 2002 with the support of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the then-opposition Indian National Congress. He returned to his civilian life of education, writing and public service after a single term. He was a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.

Sheila Dikshit

She was an Indian politician and stateswoman. The longest-serving chief minister of Delhi She briefly served as the Governor of Kerala in 2014. She was later declared a chief ministerial candidate for the Indian National Congress in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, but withdrew her nomination. She was appointed as president of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee on 10 January 2019 and remained in office until her death in July later that year.

Arvind Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwal is an IITian, and former IRS officer. Arvind Kejriwal’s entry into politics was much-talked-about, even as he has now been well-grounded in this field for over five years. The founder and national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Kejriwal came into the limelight after receiving the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Emergent Leadership in 2006. He had been recognized for empowering citizens to fight corruption and encouraging the Right to Information (RTI) movement.

His government has majorly worked on the education and healthcare sector. In a bid to make the daily commute cheaper, he tried getting metro rides for women free, but that failed. Instead, the Delhi government made DTC bus travel for women free.

Narendra Modi

Narendra Damodardas Modi, the 14th prime minister of India and a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), assumed charge as PM for a second term on May 30, 2019. This was after his party won a decisive mandate in Lok Sabha elections 2019.

In October 2018, Modi received the UN’s Champion of the Earth’ award for cooperation on environmental action. He received the 2018 Seoul Peace Prize and in 2019, and Modi was also conferred the first Philip Kotler Presidential Award. He proved his name in the world after the implementation of GST and Demonetization and he has still retained his government.

Manmohan Singh

Dr Manmohan Singh, born in Gah, West Punjab (now Pakistan) in 1932 served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. He served as Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance from 1972-76. He served as Governor, Reserve Bank of India from 1982-85.

US President Barack Obama said: “I can tell you here at G20, when the prime minister (of India) speaks, people listen.” Manmohan Singh has said that the day demonetisation of currency was announced was a black day for the Indian economy.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Atal Bihari Vajpayee (25 December 1924-16 August 2018) was an Indian politician, statesman and poet who served three terms as the Prime Minister of India, He was a member of the Indian Parliament for over five decades, having been elected ten times to the Lok Sabha, the lower house, and twice to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house.

Vajpayee became the Minister of External Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Morarji Desai. He resigned in 1979, and the Janata alliance collapsed soon after. The administration of Narendra Modi declared in 2014 that Vajpayee’s birthday, 25 December, would be marked as Good Governance Day. In 2015, he was conferred India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. He died on 16 August 2018 due to an age-related illness.

Sushma Swaraj

Sushma Swaraj (14 February 1952 – 6 August 2019) was an Indian politician and a Supreme Court lawyer. A senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party, Swaraj served as the Minister of External Affairs of India in the first Narendra Modi government (2014–2019). She was the second woman to hold the office, after Indira Gandhi. She was elected seven times as a Member of Parliament and three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilan award, posthumously in 2020 in the field of Public Affairs.

Arun jaitley

Arun Jaitley (28 December 1952 – 24 August 2019) was an Indian politician and attorney. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Jaitley served as the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of the Government of India from 2014 to 2019.

Jaitley previously held the cabinet portfolios of Finance, Defence, Corporate Affairs, Commerce and Industry, and Law and Justice in the Vajpayee government and Narendra Modi government. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award, posthumously in 2020 in the field of Public Affairs.

One of the largest sports stadium in India, which was named as Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi, has now been named after the name of Arun jaitley. It has been now renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Manik Sarkar

Manik Sarkar (born 22 January 1949) is an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Tripura from March 1998 to March 2018. He is a Politburo Member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). In March 2008, he was sworn in as leader of Left Front, the Tripura coalition government. Currently, he serves as the Leader of Opposition in Tripura Legislative Assembly.

Six years after being selected in the CPI (M) State Committee, Sarkar was included in the party state Secretariat in the year 1978. This was also the year when the first Left Front government had taken control in Tripura.

J.Jayalalithaa

Jayaram Jayalalithaa (24 February 1948 – 5 December 2016) was an Indian politician and film actress who served six times as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for over fourteen years between 1991 and 2016. From 1989 she was the general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), a Dravidian party whose cadre revered her as their Amma (mother) and Puratchi Thalaivi (revolutionary leader).

In the 2016 assembly election, she became the first Tamil Nadu chief minister since MGR in 1984 to be voted back into office. That September, she fell severely ill and, following 75 days of hospitalisation, died on 5 December 2016 due to cardiac arrest.

India is definitely witnessing a change in the game of politics. New political parties want to do it quickly and experienced ones take longer time to act on anything. But one thing that has not changed in politics is the blame game.
