D epression is something that is not very openly talked about as compared to all other traumas one goes through in life. Mental health is as vital as being physically fit . It is like a seesaw swing which gets imbalanced any moment when more pressure is there on one side. But as in the case of a seesaw, it can be clearly seen that when one side of it is more pressurized it makes the swing go up and down.

Whereas if a person is experiencing more stress on mental health, the situation needs to be dealt with at par like it is dealt with if a person goes through any kind of physical stress. But the times have changed and celebs have not hesitated to speak their mind out about the need of the hour.

Manisha Koirala

One of the most prominent actors of the 90’s era, Manisha Koirala suffered from clinical depression which resulted because of her ex-husband Samrat Dalal. The actress who is known for her roles in blockbuster hit movies like ‘Saudagar’ and ‘Sanju’ has also battled and survived ovarian cancer .

When asked about what she has to say or what is the message she would like the world to know, here is what she said in an interview to ‘Parent circle’

“ First and foremost, seek help. It could be professional or friendly advice or, help from someone you can open up to. Do not hesitate. Second, never think that you are alone. For, there is always someone willing to hear you out. And, don't ever give up on yourself — you can survive everything!”

YO YO Honey Singh

Hirdesh Singh, better known with his stage name yo yo Honey Singh went on a sabbatical from his singing career and went into isolation. After a long period of a year here is what is said in an interview with TOI:

” The last 18 months were the darkest phase of my life, and I wasn't in a state to talk to anyone. I know there were rumors that I was in rehab (for drug overdose), but I was in my Noida house throughout. The truth is I was suffering from bipolar disorder. It went on for 18 months, during which I changed four doctors, the medication wasn't working on me and crazy things were happening, One year had passed and I wasn't responding to medicines, until a fourth doctor from Delhi treated me. At one point, I thought I would live in this darkness forever. I had cut myself off from everyone. I didn't come out of my room, forget stepping out of the house. I had a beard and I didn't get a haircut for months. For someone who has performed in front of a crowd of 20,000, I was scared of facing 4-5 people. That's what bipolar disorder does to you.”

Deepika Padukone

One of the most beautiful divas of Bollywood, Deepika has also recently opened up and shared her traumas that she went through. It was her mother ‘Ujala Padukone’ who spotted her symptoms and asked her to seek medical advice. Deepika was diagnosed with depression in 2014 and since then she has not only helped herself but also encouraged others to come out of their traumas and talk about them.

She observed and noted that the unawareness creates difficulty for people to reach out. According to the ‘World Health Organization’, in India alone 7.5 lac people suffer from some sort of mental illness and.

In the view of the above statement, it inspired Deepika to create a platform for social awareness drives relating to the significance of mental health. In 2015, She set up the ‘Live Love Laugh’ foundation which aims and focusses on mental health issues.

Demetria Devonne Lovato, is an American pop singer, songwriter and television personality. She experienced suicidal thoughts as early as age seven, suffered from a bipolar disorder and a severe substance abuse.
