1. Bhangarh Fort In Alwar
The extent of the hauntedness of the Bhangarh Fort is evident from the fact that the Archaeological Society of India has put up warning signs forbidding the tourists to be present in the precincts of the fort between sunset and sunrise.
As per the story associated with this place, a tantric named Singhia fell in love with Ratnavati, the beautiful princess of Bhangarh. He tried to use magic to win over her, but the princess got to know of his evil plans and sentenced him to death. Before the Tantrik died, he cursed the palace to doom and the town to be roofless. Certain villages in the city are roofless. Even if a roof is built, it collapses soon after. So, be warned before you step in the ghost town of India.
2. Kuldhara In Rajasthan
Kuldhara village, known to be a deserted ghost village, is located near Jaisalmer. One night in 1825, all the people of Kuldhara and 83 nearby villages vanished all of a sudden. It is said that the minister of state had fallen in love with a girl from the village and had threatened to impose huge taxes upon the entire village unless they married her to him. To protect the honor of the girl, the chief of Kulhara and surrounding areas abandoned their villages and cursed the land to remain unoccupied for eternity.
3. Down Hill In Darjeeling
The Victoria Boy’s High School and Dowhill Girl’s Boarding School in Kurseong, Darjeeling, are believed to be the residence of many spirits whose footsteps can be heard echoing through the hallways.
There is one stretch often called ‘the death road’ where a headless boy is claimed to be seen following visitors. He apparently walks down towards the road and then disappears into the woods. However, there is no scientific evidence to prove the same. But the rising number of suicides in Kurseong is something to worry about.
4. Dumas Black Sand Beach In Surat
It is believed that the beach was used as a burial ground for long and hence is home to several tortured souls who call out to visitors taking midnight strolls and walking towards the sea to return back to the shore. There have been reports that those who don’t heed the voices of the dead disappear into the waters forever. But these reports have been given by only a few of them. Rest?? This beach is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
5. Jatinga In Assam
This tiny village with a population of 2500 has one of the most puzzling phenomena in the world, namely recurring mass bird suicides. Now, imagine birds falling in front of you without any reason committing mass suicide. This has baffled scientists who can’t find any reasonable justification for birds dropping dead from the sky.
6. The Lambi Dehar Mines
Once a fully operational lime mine employing thousands of workers, the Lambi Dehar Mines of Mussoorie are now abandoned. Due to hazardous working conditions, the lack of safety regulations and accidents, countless workers died in the mines and are now said to haunt the tunnels. Strange voices and screams coming from the mines are a regular occurrence here. There is a rumor about a witch being seen in this area.
7. Agrasen Ki Baoli
People who have visited this place have complained of being followed by an ominous presence and hearing whispers in the air. 8. Ramoji Film City
One of the most famous film cities of India was built over the remains of dead soldiers of the Sultanate, whose restless souls haunt the film sets till today. According to witnesses, the spotlights have been seen falling off, light men have been pushed, strange marks have appeared on mirrors, some script resembling Urdu, the language spoken by the sultans. Females have even experienced their clothes being torn off by a mystical force or being locked in rooms from inside.
9. D’Souza Chawl At Mahim
Though this chawl is situated in a populated area in Mahim, Mumbai, the residents have reported ghost sightings of a lady who lurks around the area at night. Residents of the chawl believe that there was a woman, who while filling water from the well, plunged to death since the well was boundary-less. Therefore, ‘the lady of the well’ is said to haunt the area surrounding the well every night.
10. Bombay High Court
One of the courtrooms in Bombay High Court is haunted by a ghost who threatens those accused in any murder trial from entering the courtroom. There is a joke around the haunted story that stays that “if the court would permit, this ghost of possibly a job-loving lawyer or a former murder convict could actually help solve the murder cases quickly and easily”.
